grade 5/6, unit 2 : Dans un récif (Life in a coral reef)
Recently in French class, along with an ongoing review of familiar conversational French begun in early September, your child has been learning a variety of French vocabulary, grammar and language structures that revolve around the theme of tropical fish. We are learning how to describe their location in an aquarium or sea-scape, along with their basic attributes like colour, temperament and size. This theme comes from the Visages 3 program that I use in my teaching. The aim is not exclusively for students to learn about the topic itself, but for them to learn and apply certain features of the French language by speaking, writing and listening to dialogue about topics that are appealing and meaningful to students in this age group. In fact, much second language teaching in schools today uses this communicative approach, as opposed to teaching language skills in isolation and relying on memorization.
