grade 4 unit #1, Visages 1 : Les animaux de compagnie (pets)
Starting in late September, the grade 4 students are learning basic French words and expressions for numbers, how to say your name, state your age, describe how you are feeling, the calendar, the weather and some school supplies.
After this, students will begin to learn new French vocabulary and grammar via the theme of pets. Students will learn French words for pets and for adjectives that may be used to describe pets. In terms of grammar, they will learn how to say which pets they like and do not like, which pets they have and do not have, as well as which animals they want and do not want to have as pets. Students will be learning this new material through rapping and singing songs in class, and also by reading a French comic book that contains this vocabulary and grammar, alongside regular classroom exercises. At the end of the unit, students will demonstrate their learning by writing a brief description of a real or fictional missing pet, then presenting it to the class with a picture.

French comic book "Salut, Alfred!" -
(Cécile arrive chez la vétérinaire.)
-Bonjour et bienvenue!
-Bonjour, madame.
-Comment t'appelles-tu?
-Je m'appelle Cécile, madame.
-Alors, Cécile, tu as un problème?
-Oui, madame, un gros problème.
-Eh bien, qu'est-ce que c'est?
-C'est mon chat, madame. Il est malade.
-Ton chat? Ou est-il?
-Voici, madame. C'est Bijou.
-Très bien. Assieds-toi là. La docteure arrive dans quinze minutes.
-Merci, madame.
(Un autre patient arrive chez la vétérinaire.)
-Bonjour.
-Salut.
-Ton chien est malade?
-Oui, madame.
-Comment s'appelle t'il?
-Il s'appelle Max.
-Bon. Et toi, comment t'appelles-tu?
-Marcel....Marcel Nadeau.
-Bon, assieds-toi là-bas, Marcel. La docteure arrive dans dix minutes.
(Sylvie arrive avec son hamster.)
-MADAME, MADAME!
-Calme-toi, Sylvie! Calme-toi!
-Ou est la docteure, madame? Vite! Vite!
-C'est ton hamster, encore?
-Oui, madame. C'est Moustache. Il est très malade.
-La docteure arrive dans cinq minutes. Assieds-toi là-bas.
-Ah! Tu as un hamster. Il est chouette.
-Merci! Mais il est malade...très malade. Il refuse de manger.
-J'ai le même problème. C'est mon chat, Bijou. Il refuse de manger aussi.
-C'est terrible!...Il est adorable! J'aime beaucoup les chats, moi.
-Les hamsters et les chats?...C'est stupide, ça!
-Mais non! Les chats sont extraordinaires!
-Et les hamsters sont sensationnels!
-Moi, je préfère les chiens...Le chien est un animal de compagnie formidable!
-Comment s'appelle ton chien?
-Il s'appelle Max. Il est super, hein!
-Ton chien est malade?
-Oui, il refuse de manger.
-Et toi, comment t'appelles-tu?
-André.
-Tu as aussi un hamster?
-Non.
-Une gerbille?
-Non.
-Un lapin, alors...ou une tortue?
-Non.
(GRRRRR!)
-Eh bien, ça, qu'est-ce que c'est?
-C'est Alfred...mon boa. Alfred ne refuse jamais de manger!
