grade 4/5, unit #5 : DANS UNE ILE
During the first few weeks of school, after some review of conversational French, the students in room 2 have started learning new French vocabulary and grammar via the theme of exploring a tropical island. The vocabulary to be learned includes features that can be found on a tropical island and terms used to indicate direction and precise location. In terms of grammar, they will primarily learn how to understand questions about where features are located on an island map, and how to answer these questions correctly, using proper French grammar, as well as simply describing in full sentences what can be seen on an island map, both orally and in writing. The culminating project will involve students designing their own island, and creating a map using learned French vocabulary to indicate where certain features are located. In addition, students will also learn about certain islands around the world where French is spoken. In fact, the learning from this unit is supported by having the students read a short, colourful comic book entitled “Bienvenue en Martinique” (‘Welcome to Martinique’), which details the visit of a Quebecois family to the French-speaking island of Martinique in the Caribbean, and includes much of the grammar and vocabulary to be learned during other lessons.
