room 10 : grades 4/5 French
I am once again the Core French teacher for the grades 4 and 5 students in room 10.
Here is the link to the Ontario Curriculum for Core French if you want to read it in more detail.
http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/curriculum/elementary/fsl18-2013curr.pdf
Learning French is no longer focused on learning grammar at certain grades, and will ideally take place through a more communicative approach that stresses authentic conversation. New vocabulary and grammar will obviously be taught, but the French teacher now has more flexibility when it comes to what to teach students during daily lessons without being tied to teaching from a specific plan or program. The concept is that this will lead to greater learning because the French teacher can adapt to the learning needs and styles of students within each class and plan and adapt instruction to those factors. I have been trying to teach according to this concept for the past few years since the new curriculum was introduced while still being mindful of the aspects of some older approach that work in some situations.
Here is my planned sequence of units for the upcoming school year, with links to extra resources to support learning at home :
1. INTRODUCTION : basic conversational French
2. LES PATTES : learning to describe the physical traits of animals and how they move
3. LES T-SHIRTS : learning about different summer and winter sports and how to promote them by designing a T-shirt
4 : DANS LES NUAGES : learning about various aircraft and feats in aviation history, and how to describe the qualities of inventors and pilots
5 LA FORÊT : learning about different wild animals and their habitat

(then repeat the same pattern, except change the day of the week in each verse that follows)
Mardi matin…
Mercredi matin…
Jeudi matin…
Vendredi matin…
Samedi matin…
Dimanche matin…

Right now we are learning about how to tell time in French in class, which usually follows the format "Il est ___ heures_____ ".
Here are the lyrics to "Toc toc toc", the chant we are learning in French to practice saying the time in French.
Toc toc toc
Toc toc toc !
Quelle heure est-il?
Il est une heure.
Il est une heure et demie.
Il est deux heures.
Il est deux heures et demie.
(continue with the numbers : trois, quatre, cinq, six, sept, huit, neuf, dix, then onze)
Il est midi. (noon)
